Dr Shunpei Yamazakis Foundation (Stiftelse)

The Dr. Shunpei Yamazaki Foundation was established in 2025 and is based in Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr Shunpei Yamazaki

Dr. Yamazaki’s primary ambition with his current research at Semiconductor Energy Laboratory Co., Ltd. (SEL) is to combat the rapid rise in global warming through research and development focused on semiconductors, batteries, and OLEDs.

Dr. Yamazaki therefore defined his foundation’s purpose as follows:

”The purpose of the Foundation is to combat global warming through technological solutions, especially solutions that already exist or will be developed at Dr. Yamazaki’s Semiconductor Energy Laboratories (SEL) in Japan. Funds from this foundation can be awarded as financial support to Swedish researchers who (1) want to participate in research projects at SEL, (2) want to perform their own experiments with equipment at SEL, (3) or a combination of (1) and (2)”

With the establishment of the “Dr. Shunpei Yamazaki Foundation,” Swedish researchers are invited to apply for a very generous fellowship at SEL’s Laboratory for Pioneering Technology through the Sweden-Japan Foundation (SJF).

During the fellowship period, the researcher will have unique, free, and dedicated access to R&D infrastructure, supercomputer facilities for materials and device simulation, equipment for the synthesis of organic materials, thin-film deposition, and the fabrication of nano-devices, as well as instruments for physical, chemical, optical, and electrical analysis. SEL staff will provide support as needed. Although SEL has a strong focus on new battery materials and oxide semiconductors for data processing with extremely low power consumption, the fellowship is not limited to these topics.

About SEL:
SEL is a unique company, engaged in creative R&D and patenting novel technologies. Profits from patent licensing are invested into further R&D and the intellectual property creation cycle. Over the years, SEL has developed some of the world’s top-class thin-film transistor technologies through research of low
temperature continuous grain silicon (CGS®) and oxides such as c-axis aligned crystalline indium gallium zinc oxide (CAAC-IGZO®) and crystal indium oxide (crystal IO®). SEL’s world-wide patent share in these areas is among the highest in the world. In addition to patents, SEL staff and Fellows are encouraged to publish scientific papers and to present at conferences.
